Samurai!

January 13, 2010 6:44:44 am

Well, it is official, I am one step closer to Samurai.

In April, my brother, nameSake, came out to visit and with him, he brought 4 months of training in a new art he had located called Nami Ryu.  As he could not possibly not tell me about this, we talked about how I could come out to Seattle to come to his Dojo with him.  For about 8 months, I did what I could to mimic what nameSake had done when he was showing me why his art was already proving superior to our prior training.

This was a hard topic on its own.  I have been training in the Martial Arts since i was 7 years old.  And after 22 years, I learn that, there is something far superior to what I knew before.  Even when I was teaching, I would find holes in my knowledge, that just didn't make sense. Nami Ryu seems to have answers to them, making it a more complete art in my eyes.  A way that no other martial art had.

And funnily enough, nameSake was able to bring this realization to me with only having trained for 4 months.  I was completely astounded at how his style had changed so drastically that I no longer stood a chance next to him, and in only 4 months.

I was a convert.

So, as I said, I mimicked his movements.  And tried to understand.  Even though, I had no real idea what I was doing.  I figured something is better than nothing.  In December, I flew out to Seattle for a 3 day weekend and spent my entire time there training in Nami Ryu!  It is amazing how what you "know" can be completely thrown to the wind with just a little bit of solid logic.  I spent some time with the instructor, Garron Billick, and he said he would work with me remotely to work on this art.

it has begun! (As Mortal Kombat so lovingly put it)  I am officially working with an instructor who teaching a Samurai art!

The weekend we amazing.  All of the guys I met were great.  It was really nice to have a "guys" weekend, sans the generalization that there would be no intelligent conversation.  We discussed philosophy, art , books, and admittedly, the topic of girls came up from time to time.  :)

We had some great Indian and Thai food (both favorites of mine), and best of all, I got to spend time with my brother, and we got to kick each other around for 8-10 hours a day.

It was an amazing weekend and I thought everyone should know about it.
